Art mediation with students from the local high school, working about Alfombreras project done by Marcos Vidal Font, family history archive project and textile memory of Sineu village.
“The students of the Artistic Expression subject at IES Sineu recently participated in a talk and silkscreen printing workshop based on the work of the artist Marcos Vidal, in an activity supported by the Mallorca Council. The proposal has allowed for a dialogue to be established between contemporary artistic creation, historical memory and the handcraft heritage of the island.
The mediation activity is linked to the exhibition project “Alfombreras, história d’una identitat tèxil”, in which the artist provides a personal vision of his family past focused on the knotted tapestries that his ancestors worked in an artisanal way for more than a century in Palma, Sineu and Alcúdia. This project highlights a textile tradition deeply rooted in Mallorca and often invisible.
From this framework, Vidal’s work dialogues with the history of the old Alfombras Sineu carpet’s factory, a key space in the economic and social life of Sineu and the region. Many women from Sineu and the surrounding villages worked in this factory, and with their hands they sustained a fundamental activity for the local identity.
During the talk, the students learned about the artist’s creative process and the historical, family and human context that inspires his work. The subsequent screen printing workshop offered a practical experience of a four-dimensional print, inspired by a fragment of one of the patterns used to make the carpets, which allowed the students to experiment with this artistic technique as a tool for expression and transmission of collective memory.
In addition, this activity is part of a wider project at the center: the preparation for the next mural for IES Sineu. The students are working on an artistic intervention that wants to leave an imprint of this traditional craft, using as a central element the hands designed by the artist Vidal, a symbol of manual labor and the legacy of the women who were part of this history.
With initiatives like this, IES Sineu reaffirms its commitment to artistic education rooted in the territory, which connects students with its history, encourages creativity and highlights the municipality’s material and intangible heritage.”
