Personal histories is the project that Christine Gist created at sant Marc air residence and exhibited at Sa Quartera art center in the frame of the exhibition Playing around. Incart contemporary art festival 2019 of Inca, Mallorca, April-May
«Playing involves experimentation, chance and an element of risk. It will work? At this stage, I imagine a piece that juxtaposes the false with the real. The proposed installation for INCART follows my strategy to work in an unknown space. I usually start with a collection of unrelated objects and materials. By playing with their transformation and juxtaposition, they develop a narrative that changes the perception of the place.»
Christine Gist lives and works in Hastings, East Sussex (UK). She lived in the USA for many years receiving a BFA in Sculpture from the University of Washington and Seattle, and an MFA Sculpture from Yale University School of Art, New Haven. She has extensive experience of working with artists, curators, public agencies and private organisations across the South East region and mainland Europe.
Recent exhibitions include: ‘Identity’in St Leonards, The SPACE/’Identity’ in Dordrecht, installations & performance across the city (2018), ‘Feet’, a SOCO exhibition for Coastal Currents Arts Festival, Electro Studios Project Space, St Leonards (2018), ‘Curiouser #09’, installations, film & performances, Gare Congrès, Bruxelles (2018), ‘A Cabinet of Strange and Familiar Objects’, part of saison britannique, Médiathèque de Moulle, Région Hauts-de-France (2016), Baracca: ‘Inside Job, The Director’s cut’, Locatie Z, Den Haag (2016), ‘Curiouser #07’, Cour de Curé Letellier, Mons (2016), ‘and yet the earth does move and the cycle of life goes on’, Sotto Voce Arts Festival Hastings (2015).
Her artistic and curatorial practice is concerned with temporary interventions which usually take place outside a gallery context. She frequently uses re-purposed materials and objects, animating these elements and the locations to create new narratives for alternative spaces.
In 2009, Gist founded The SPACE, a nomadic project which brought artists’ temporary interventions and events to redundant buildings and disused sites in Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea. Since 2013, The SPACE has been located in a disused outdoor site owned by Network Rail which has hosted projects by established and emerging artists from the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In 2016, in partnership with Espace 36, Saint-Omer, Gist established cabinet / armoire at Médiathèque de Moulle. This satellite venue provides opportunities for artists from the UK and Région Hauts-de-France to make new work within the context of a small library and garden.
