In May 2025, Berlin based artist Matthias Beckmann is our guest at the Espai Sant Marc Atelier. Matthias Beckmann is a draughtsman. The artist is here through a collaboration with the Lichtenberg Studios, an artist residency programme founded and run by Uwe Jonas in Berlin’s district Lichtenberg.
Matthias Beckmann is well known for his linear graphite drawings. Since his stay in India as a guest of the Goethe-Institut Bangalore in 2022, he has also been creating watercolour drawings. He works in front of the motif, without preparatory sketches, without photographic aids and without corrections.
His series of drawings deal with places and institutions: The German parliament Deutscher Bundestag in Berlin, chambers of art and curiosities in Germany and Austria, a southern German car factory, an emergency shelter for refugees, the Romanesque churches in Cologne, the big hospital Charité in Berlin, the streets of Bangalore, etc. He repeatedly draws in museums. From 2010 to 2012, he created a series about 88 Berlin artists’ studios.
Matthias Beckmann spends a whole month in Sineu – with a painter’s stool, pencil, brush and water colour. He draws the town, the buildings, the weekly market, the Fira de Sineu, which takes place every year on the first weekend in May, the people, the cyclists taking a break in the café, the alleyways, the road signs, the cars, the shops, the structure of the town, everyday life. He observes and tries to avoid any judgement. He is attentive and walks around until he discovers a motif or a perspective that interests him. He does not invent anything, but the colour sets accents.
The series of drawings allows us to rediscover the seemingly familiar place. Matthias Beckmann chooses unusual perspectives and draws our attention to details that we tend to overlook. A selection of drawings will be published in an edition of signed and limited prints, which can be purchased at Espai Sant Marc.

De 2010 a 2012, creó una serie sobre 88 estudios de artistas Berlín.
Matthias Beckmann pasara un mes entero en Sineu, con un taburete de pintor, lápiz, pincel y acuarela. Dibuja la ciudad, los edificios, el mercado semanal, la Fira de Sineu, que tiene lugar cada año el primer fin de semana de mayo, la gente, los ciclistas que se toman un descanso en el café, los callejones, las señales de tráfico, los automóviles, las tiendas, la estructura de este pueblo, la vida cotidiana. Observa e intenta evitar cualquier juicio. Está atento y camina hasta que descubre un motivo o una perspectiva que le interesa. No inventa nada, pero el color marca los acentos.
La serie de dibujos nos permite redescubrir un lugar aparentemente familiar. Matthias Beckmann elige perspectivas inusuales y atrae nuestra atención hacia detalles que solemos pasar por alto. Una selección de dibujos se publicará en una edición limitada y firmada, que posteriormente podrá adquirirse en el Espai Sant Marc.
